The Aatu homestay is situated in the heart of the district capital Madikeri (Mercara) at an elevation of 1500 mts. This little township is considered as the capital of the Coorg region. Mercara is set on a series of ridges that command breathtaking views, was an unassuming state in its own right till a few decades ago. The Friday Market at Mercara has a surplus of eco-friendly commodities made by the local tribal people. Shopping here could be a worthwhile experience.

The main river in Coorg is the Kaveri (Cauvery) which starts at Talkaveri, almost 40 km away from Madikeri. The climate is pleasant compared to other parts of Southern India. In July and August, rainfall is intense, and there are often rain showers into November. Yearly rainfall may exceed 4,000 millimeters in certain areas. The winters are normally chilly and temperature ranges from 11 C to 25 C. The winter is normally from November to January. The hottest time is April, May when the temperature may cross 33 C.
